Vijayawada: Massive crowds of NGOs and other government employees braved a steady drizzling which turned into a downpour to make the ‘Save Andhra Pradesh’ meeting a grand success at the sprawling Swarajya Maidan Grounds here on Friday.

APNGOs president P Ashok Babu, also the chairman of the Seemandhra JAC, could not speak much due to the rain. However, the employees and general public with women in large numbers did not stir out their seats, and listened to all the speeches with rapt attention. Speaker after speaker enthused the audience, dwelling at length on the ill-effects of bifurcation and warning the Central government against moving any further on the issue.

Earlier in the day, while interacting with media persons, Ashok Babu made it clear that the strike would continue till the Central government kept the division issue in suspended motion. He further cautioned that more government employees’ associations would join the strike in future if the division decision was not withdrawn or kept in abeyance. He hinted at the electricity employees, who went on 72-hour-long strike earlier, joining the indefinite strike to put pressure on the UPA leadership.

At the meeting, every speaker endorsed his demand against the division of the State and also the call for resignations of the Seemandhra MPs and Central Ministers. Electricity JAC leader Saibaba said that they were prepared for indefinite strike and would switch off the power if the Central government continued with proposal to divide the State.Student JAC leader Krishna Yadav dared the Congress and the UPA leadership to divide the State and taste the wrath of the Telugu people. He wanted to know on what criteria the government had proposed division of the State.

He contended that Hyderabad was built with the sweat and blood of the people of all the three regions. “The city was a rocky place before 1956. But it was made a beautiful city today and we are not ready to give it up,” he asserted. The RTC employees leaders also said that they would continue the agitation till their demand was accepted and the State remained united.
