Hyderabad: The Congress party on Tuesday demanded that the Election Commission of India extend the polling time by an hour on December 7 in view of Friday.

Speaking to media persons after giving a representation to Chief Electoral Officer Dr. Rajath Kumar at the Secretariat, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) Spokesperson Syed Nizamuddin said that as per the schedule the polling for Telangana Legislative Assembly elections would be held on December 7 from 7 AM to 5 PM. However, he said since the polling day falls on Friday, it might affect the polling percentage.

"There are about 13-14% Muslims in Telangana and they are sizeable in numbers in about 40 out of 119 constituencies. Since Muslims offer prayers at Central Mosques on Friday afternoon, we fear that it might affect the polling percentage. Therefore, we've requested the Election Commission to extend the polling time by one hour. This will facilitate large number of people to cast their vote," Syed Nizamuddin said.
