Thrashing of cop inside Assembly premises maha2Mumbai: Five legislators were suspended for the rest of the year by the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Wednesday for having thrashed a police officer inside the premises of the Assembly on Tuesday.A The resolution suspending the MLAs was moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Harshvardhan Patil, who said their action had lowered the dignity of the House. It was passed by a voice vote by the Assembly. Kshitij Thakur, a young MLA of the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi and son of controversial politician Hitendra Thakur, and nephew of alleged gangster Jayendra (Bhai) Thakur had moved a breach of privilege notice against assistant police inspector Sachin Suryavanshi in the Assembly on Tuesday. Suryavanshi had a day earlier hauled up Thakur on the Bandra-Worli sealink for over-speeding and going at 100 kmph, as against a speed limit of 50 kmph on the bridge. There were heated arguments between the two, with Thakur asserting that he was a legislator. He, however, paid up the fine, and the next day moved a privilege notice against the traffic cop. Suryavanshi was sitting in the visitor's gallery in legislature when the notice came up. According to Thakur, he made a provocative gesture from the gallery. Accompanied by four other legislators including Ram Kadam from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, Rajan Salvi of the Shiv Sena, the BJP's Jaykumar Rawal and independent MLA Pradeep Jaiswal, Thakur went up to the gallery, dragged the traffic cop out and beat him up in front of others. Suryavanshi had to be rushed in an ambulance to a hospital. But the attack triggered off a volley of protests from senior police officers in Maharashtra, who called on chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and demanded action against the legislators. Chavan took serious note of the attack and the police immediately filed an FIR and initiated criminal action against the legislators. The MLAs have now been barred from attending the legislature till December 31. For Kadam, the MNS legislator, this is the second time he is being suspended from the legislature. In October 2009, he had attacked a Samajwadi Party MLA, Abu Azmi, inside the legislature. The MNS had asked all legislators to take the oath in Marathi, but Azmi had defied them and taken the oath in Hindi. Kadam had walked up to him and slapped him.
