The Election Commission on Monday gave four more days to Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi to reply to the Notice served on him on his controversial speeches delivered in Churu in Rajasthan on October 23 and in Indore in Madhya Pradesh the next day.

The Election Commission (EC) on Monday gave only four days to Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi to respond to its notice on his alleged violation of election code. The notice also pertains to the speech in which Gandhi had alleged that youth affected by the Muzaffarnagar riots were approached by Pakistan's Inter- Services Intelligence (ISI). Rahul Gandhi had sought a week's time to respond to the EC notice of October 31.

He was issued notice by the poll panel for his speeches in which he accused the BJP of causing communal flare-ups and said that ISI was contacting the Muzaffarnagar riot victims.

The Election Commission on Monday gave four more days to Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi to reply to the Notice served on him on his controversial speeches delivered in Churu in Rajasthan on October 23 and in Indore in Madhya Pradesh the next day.

Rahul Gandhi, in his speeches, while trying to sympathize with the Muslim youth, had actually ended up raising doubts over their patriotism. The BJP was quick to petition the Election Commission, accusing Rahul Gandhi of “inciting riotous behavior,” where he had blamed even the BJP for playing the communal card.

Rahul Gandhi has been given the time till Friday to reply to the Notice served on him. Earlier in the day, he had sought one week’s time to reply, but was given only four days by the Election Commission. In the controversial speeches, Rahul Gandhi had stated that a police official from the Intelligence agency told him that the ISI was trying to exploit the situation and was in touch with the victims.Though his intention was to expose the BJP for inciting communal violence, he ended up embarrassing the Muslims by suggesting that they could easily be won-over by the Pakistani ISI, due to their exploitation by the majority community. Targeting the BJP, the Congress Vice- President had accused the saffron party of inciting communal passions in Uttar Pradesh after the riots. In its Notice on October 31, the Election Commission had charged Rahul Gandhi, prima facie, of violating the Model Code of Conduct by aggravating mutual differences and creating an atmosphere of mutual hatred and tension between castes and communities. In all of these clauses, Rahul Gandhi, supposedly the Congress Prime Ministerial candidate, is accused of violating the Model Code of Conduct.
