It's showtime. Move over speeches and campaigns, Gujarata Chief Minister Narendra Modi is now busy with something bigger. The BJP's prime ministerial candidate is all set to lead the run for unity that will take place across cities on Sunday.
Besides Modi, party chief Rajnath Singh, senior leader LK Advani and other political stalwarts will lead the unique one of its kind event to mobilise support for building Sardar Patel's biggest statue in Gujarat.
The event will coincide with the death anniversary of Patel.
Run for Unity: Modi shows the way
The event which plans to cover over 565 places will see all the full participation of BJP leaders and workers in the two-km run, said BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas.
Senior BJP leader LK Advani will be seen in the Ahmedabad run while Modi, Rajnath and Arun Jaitley will be seen in Vadodra and Delhi respectively. Sushma Swaraj will participate in the Bhopal run.
Advani will participate in the run in Ahmedabad, Modi in Vadodra, Singh and Arun Jaitley in Delhi and Sushma Swaraj in Bhopal.
With this run, the BJp will kick-start the campaign to collect iron and soil from over 2 lakh panchayats. The materials would be used to build what the Gujarat CM has dubbed as the tallest statue in the world. The Sardar Patel statue will be 182 metres.
Naqvi added that several cultural and regional bodies too will be part of the run. With respect to the environmental clearances for the project, Naqvi assured that the party was already through with the formalities.
The BJP intends to honour Patel for uniting 565 independent states with India.
Naqvi alleged that the ruling party during its regimes had made every effort to erase Patel's contributions from the history books. Thus his party (the BJP) intends to bring Patel back into public limelight as he was the true nation-builder.
BJP and especially Modi have been accused by Congress of trying to appropriate Patel's legacy as the party lacked any truly great leader linked with the freedom movement.
Modi had even regretted that Jawaharlal Nehru and not Patel had become the country's first prime minister, claiming that India's destiny would have been different had Patel been the prime minister.
