Cornering National Media Costs Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP Dear, Ramlila Maidan, Chief Minister of Delhi. Is it the penultimate shot of populism previous to the looming Lok Sabha Polls or similar unadulterated concern for common man, that showed glimpse the first time in Ramlila Maidan

Is it the penultimate shot of populism previous to the looming Lok Sabha Polls or similar unadulterated concern for common man, that showed glimpse the first time in Ramlila Maidan, some years back? Seems former may have taken over the AAP umpteen times - inelegantly and irrefutably flouting economic theories in the past few weeks, the present dharna is no singular to say the least. But, the ‘greatest showman’ in the Indian political ecosystem at present, the Chief Minister of Delhi state (not yet a full-fledged one) Arvind Kejriwal has a sturdy point to establish here.

While all kinds of theories emanating from the gracefully dressed ‘intellectuals’ appearing on the television, sitting in their comfy couches in the chilly winters of Delhi may institute that the former IRS officer may have gone too far this time by self-labeling him as an ‘anarchist’, and openly calling out the Union government for a tug-of-war - but aren’t these ‘wise-men’ of the country always been anti- AAP and to its left to leftists policies? Nevertheless, what comes out as a clear astonishment this time is the way news media is over-viewing the whole affair.
The fourth pillar of democracy had always supported the AAP cause , barring the days when it was belligerently targeting the Reliance (for all palpable reasons), this time something really seems going fishy somewhere. The way media (especially the electronic media) reported the entire matter with a clear bias on Monday raises suspicion of the highest kind. What went wrong overnight? The same political unit whose dharna and agitations received considerable positive attention and coverage from the media, finds the fresh stir anarchist and anti-democratic in values.
Only two reasons come to mind, which define the 360-turn from our news reporting agencies.
  • One is Arvind Kejriwal himself taking on some sections of the media yesterday calling them anti-AAP. This can bring anguish in the camps of any organization, leave aside our media, which remorsefully lacks adequate credibility in it to declare itself completely unbiased.
  • The second maybe more interesting to learn. A few days back Arvind appeared in an interview with the editor-in-chief of IBN 7 Rajdeep Sardesai and to put it plainly on paper, Kejriwal was truly at its attacking best which is quite unusual to see from a man who is otherwise associated with smiling glances (well acted at times). The way he tore apart sheepish looking Sardesai may not have pleased many of his influential peers in the industry.
Taking on the rulers of the game head on and that too in an arrogant fashion as he displayed can put you at a disturbing disquiet for a long time to come and consequently, not many including the most powerful of our politicians dare to dare against the daring (read news media).

Either they learn to remain mute and confine their criticism for partisan media to their drawing rooms or own the shares of the most legitimate medium of public discourse in a sensible democracy. And, we are no ‘Banana Republic’ – are we?
The way Kejriwal confronted Rajdeep set the tone for the majority of news media owners and their high-flying editors to go all bashing Kejriwal.
This flak is up for take AAP – can’t earn enmity with crocodile if you house yourself in the pond. Isn’t it?
