The OROP (One Rank One Pay ) for military veterans has become a heated and controversial subject with army veterans protesting on Delhi streets for over two months about the governmental delay in sanctioning OROP scheme. The well-read, outspoken Raanjhanaa andTanu Weds Manu Returns actress Swara Bhaskar also happens to be the child of an ex-serviceman. Swara's father Uday Bhaskar is a well known defence analyst and retired Naval Officer.

On Tuesday, Swara was seen on a national news channel at a popular debate show making an eloquent defence of the military veterans who are on protest. The panel included several eminent personalities and 'fauji- children' like Gul Panag and Jyoti Randhawa.

Swara spoke passionately about how OROP was an emotional issue about the honour of the fauji, but equally an issue of justice, equity and ethics. "Why should civilian government servants especially bureaucrats automatically receive the apex scale pension notwithstanding rank, whereas the military veterans, jawaans and officers who have fought to keep our country safe be forgotten as soon as they retire?"

On questioning Swara confirmed her views and said, "It is a shame that at a time when we are claiming celebrations for the victorious anniversary of the 1965 war with Pakistan, the very veterans who fought that war are on the streets demanding long denied justice and successive governments have paid no heed. I think a restive and discontented armed forces is certainly not a good idea for National Security. I hope these honourable military veterans get their due soon!"
Amen to that Swara!
