Hyderabad: Skipper Vinay Kumar led Karnataka’s late fight back to restrict Maharashtra-who rather comfortably cleared the deficit of 210 and had full eight wickets in hand- to a modest 272 for the loss of six wickets at stumps on the penultimate day of the Ranji Trophy Final at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
After a fighting ton from Kedar Jadhav, the Karnataka bowlers pulled up their socks and picked up four wickets in the final session of play to ensure Maharashtra’s lead stayed at 62 runs.
Resuming the innings from 474 for seven, Karnataka tail-enders managed to score 41 runs before they were bowled out for 515 in 171 overs.
Maharashtra began their second innings with Vijay Zol and Harshad Khadiwale adding 18 runs before Vinay Kumar dismissed Khadiwale for nine runs in the third over.
Ankit Bawne, who scored 89 in the first innings, and Zol went to lunch at 54 for one. Vinay Kumar struck of the first ball after lunch to claim the dangerous-looking Vijay Zol’s wicket for 31. But just when the match looked to be slipping away from Maharashtra’s hand, Jadhav and Bawne staged a recovery while putting on 118 runs for the third wicket.
Bawne departed soon after tea when he failed to read a flighted delivery from Shreyas Gopal and was stumped by Chidambaram Gautam for 61. Sangram Atitkar (0) fell for a duck. Chirag Khurana and Jadhav tried to pull things back for Maharashtra by taking quick singles and putting the loose balls to the boundaries. Jadhav reached his century in 118 balls also becoming Ranji Thophy’s highest run-scorer this season. Their 88-run partnership was finally broken by Vinay Kumar’s short run up as Khurana skied a full toss to Robin Uthappa in the covers. Jadhav’s innings also ended in a similar fashion for 112, when he hit one straight to Robin Uthappa.
Later, Vinay Kumar, whose arrogance drew flak from the media personnel during the , said that they had almost sealed the championship and would look to knock out their opponents cheaply. Brief scores: Maharashtra 305 and 272/6 (Jadhav 112, Bawne 61, Vinay 4/84) lead Karnataka 515 (Rahul 131, Satish 117, Fallah 3/74)
