London: Convicted Paralympics runner Oscar Pistorius has reportedly been surviving off tinned food after he refused to consume prison food over fear of being poisoned by other inmates.

The double amputee athlete, who is serving a five-year jail sentence for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in February 2013, is consuming a diet of tinned spicy vegetables, which he purchases from the on-site shop at Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria, the Independent reported.

According to reports, a series of death threats have made him suspicious of other inmates, leading him to take limited food, as a result of which, he has lost weight significantly.

Reflecting on Pistorius' condition, a fellow prisoner said that Oscar never walks around without a guard, adding that he never mingles with other inmates .

Pistorius was acquitted of murder charges and was found guilty of culpable homicide, and is expected to be released in August to spend the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.
