Hyderabad: Following a huge gap of about 3,000 MW between the demand and supply of power in Telangana, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday reviewed the situation and directed officials to initiate measures on a war-footing to generate 20,000 MW power in the next three years.

While the demand for power in the State is to the tune of 7,000 MW, only 4,000 MW of power is available, resulting in long power cuts both in urban and rural areas.

In view of this, KCR asked the officials to focus on generating more of hydel power. Stating that there was big scope to tap 5,000 MW of hydel power, KCR asked the officials to conduct a survey on Krishna, Godavari, Pranahita, Penganga, Manjira and other rivers. Gurramgadda on the river Krishna, Kadam, Icchampally and L Madugu dams on Godavari river could be the places suitable for hydel power generation, he added.

The total flow of water from these sources is 11 lakh cusecs which offers great potential for power generation. In addition the capacity of hydel power from Jurala project could also be increased, KCR felt.

KCR asked Telangana Genco to explore the possibility of generating 6,000 MW of power immediately either at Manuguru or Illendu areas in Khammam district. Genco chairman Prabhakar Rao, SPDCL CMD SAM Rizvi, CM peshi officials among others took part in the meeting.
