Hyderabad: The proposed changes in the alignment of Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) route are likely to extend the project by an approximate 3.2 km on one of the corridors.

According to HMR Managing Director NVS Reddy, the realignment of route at Telangana Legislative Assembly and Sultan Bazaar on Corridor-I and Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) towards Falaknuma on Corridor-II will extend the route by nearly 3.2km. The Corridor-II connects Secunderabad to Falakuma covering a distance of 15 km. While no major difference in distance is expected due to change in alignment at Assembly and Sultan Bazaar, the change of alignment from MGBS to Falaknuma would increase the distance by 3.2 km.

Following objections raised by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on the original route map, the Larsen and Toubro Metro Rail Hyderabad (L&TMRH) has agreed to change the alignment on certain routes.

A technical and financial feasibility report was being prepared to implement the project with changes in alignment. The State government has offered to compensate for the additional costs that the L&TMRH would incur due to change in alignments.

The Chief Minister had earlier assured the Telangana Assembly of convening an all-party meeting to discuss the proposed changes in the 72 km elevated metro project being developed by L&T with three corridors and 66 stations.

Talking to media persons here, NVS Reddy said they could get clarity on alignment changes only after the proposed all-party meeting.

Meanwhile, the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee on Monday threatened to launch agitation if the State government changes the alignment in the Old City.

TPCC Spokesperson G Niranjan said the State government was forcing the L&TMRH to change the alignment from MGBS to Falaknuma. He said this change would deprive the people living in Sultan Shahi, Lal Darwaza, Hari Bowli, Aliabad and their surroundings from the benefits of metro rail. The changed route is likely to pass through Musi River, Bahadurpura, Kalapather to Falaknuma.

Niranjan said the TRS government has been functioning under the pressure of MIM which forced the authorities to change the metro rail alignment. He threatened that the TPCC would launch a massive agitation if any changes were made in the alignment of metro rail route in the Old City.
