Khammam: Transport Minister P Mahender Reddy asked the officers of TSRTC and the transport department to work in coordination with each other to guide the road transport corporation on the path of profits.

The Minister held a review meeting with officials of the transport department and RTC at the bus depot here on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, he said 634 buses were being operated to different places from the six bus depots in Khammam district. Mahender Reddy said travelling in private vehicles was not safe. He expressed concern over the increase in number of accidents of private vehicles. He urged the officers of the RTA and RTC to take measures to prevent accidents. He said once the process of bifurcation of RTC was completed, the State government would change the logo of TSRTC and also the colour of the buses. The Transport Minister pointed out that the RTC employees played a key role during the movement for a separate State of Telangana. In recognition of their contribution, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has recently announced Telangana increment for RTC employees.

Mahender Reddy said that soon 500 new buses would be purchased. Of these, 100 would be AC buses. He said a comprehensive action plan would be evolved to ensure profits for RTC in all the 94 depots in Telangana State.

He announced that he would soon convene a special meeting with managers of all RTC depots in the State. He pointed out that though the RTC was running in losses, the government was ensuring maximum service to people without imposing any burden on them.

Stating that Khammam city would require another RTC depot, he said he would consider the issue. The Minister advised the RTC officials to provide CC roads and drinking water at all bus depots and bus stations.

Regional Transport officer Abdul Mehimin said a special drive was conducted in the district to create awareness among the people that travel in RTC buses would ensure safety and comfort.

RTC Executive Director Purushottham Nayak said that the Khammam region of RTC was formed on November 18, 1994. He said every day 3 lakh passengers travel in 630 buses in Khammam region. The bus facility is currently being provided to 794 villages in the district. Still the bus facility needs to be extended to another 65 villages. Khammam Zilla Parishad Chairperson G Kavitha was also present.

Earlier, the Transport Minister inspected the Khammam bus stand. Speaking to the media persons on the occasion, he said the government has allocated Rs 150 crore for development of RTC. He said efforts would be made to provide RTC bus services to every village in all 10 districts in the State.

The Minister also felicitated six RTC bus drivers belonging to Khammam region who have completed service of 20 to 22 years without cases of accidents.
