Warangal: Irrespective of caste, women were the most suppressed section in the society, said E Suhas Nair, representative of German based Karl Kübel Foundation for Child and Family. Generally in Indian society SC/ST communities were considered as the most oppressed and exploited, but in fact, in all castes and social structures it was the women the most subjugated, he noted.

Even in the current generation the women were often denied due recognition to their work and their contribution to the society. It was mainly happening because of the culture of male dominance that was deeply rooted in Indian society, Nair explained. He addressed a large gathering of women at Peddapur village in Atmakur mandal in the district on Friday where the town based Sarvodaya Youth Organisation organised an awareness programme on women rights marking Women’s Day, which falls on March 8.

Suhas Nair stated that collective efforts by all the stakeholders were needed. Main emphasis should be laid on women education as education would help the women to fight against the injustice being meted out to them. Women and child development department extension officer EP Premalatha addressing the gathering lamented over the increasing number of atrocities against women which she said have been curtailing their freedom.

“The women are forced to fear the men like people scared of wild animals. This kind of situation is really blight on the civilized society” she opined. In order to bring change in such situation the children should be brought up in a sensible manner. If a person of a particular caste suffers injustice, the organisations of such caste come to his support and the same happens when a government employee was subjected to any kind of discrimination. But when a woman becomes victim of violence, only a few come forward to condemn it, said the SYO secretary Dr P Damodar.

MRPS state secretary K Sudhakar speaking on the occasion asked the villagers to say no to the practice of child marriages. The local MPTCs K Ramesh and B Kumaraswamy, Sarvodaya staff V Indira and BA Hepshiba and others were present. The programme was held with the assistance from Karl Kübel Foundation for Child and Family.
