Nearly 200 farmers, under the leadership of AIKMS, staged an agitation in front of the Collectorate here on Wednesday.

Nizamabad: The All-India Kisan Mazdoor Sabha (AIKMS) has demanded the State government to directly purchase red and white jowar (Sorghum valgare) from farmers and take action against the red jowar contractors who broke an agreement reached with the farmers. Nearly 200 farmers, under the leadership of AIKMS, staged an agitation in front of the Collectorate here on Wednesday.

Later, they submitted a memorandum to District Collector Ronald Ross demanding that the government purchase jowar from the farmers immediately. AIKMS State secretary Vuppal Prabhakar said farmers in Armoor sub-division were producing largest quantity of red jowar in the country. This was being using as cattle feed in Haryana, Gujarat, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, besides being exported to Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Prabhakar said contractors agreed to pay Rs 2,400 to Rs 2,800 per quintal of red jowar.
