Two Kakatiya period temples restored in Khammam Dist

The restoration of two ancient temples of Sri Ganapeshwaralayam and Mukkanteshwaralayam in Kusumanchi the Kakatiya era in Kusumanchi Mandal headquarters in the Khammam District has begun on war footing to revive their lost glory.

For long, the two ancient temples dating back to the 12th century were built during the reign of Kakatiya Dynasty have been neglected due to lack of concern from the departments and agencies. Particularly, the Mukkanteshwaralayam testimony that is rich in architecture and flourished during the Kakatiya regime had become a target of treasure hunters over the past couple of years.

The temple attracts hordes of devotees during Sivaratri festivities every year. The area surrounding the two temples is dotted with some archaeological monuments including a megalithic menhir (a vertical standing stone). A pathway between Ganapeshwaralaym and Mukkanteshwaralayam will also be laid for the benefit of devotees.

The engineers of the Telangana State Tourism Development Corporation have taken up the work of strengthening the foundations of the structures, reassembling of disturbed stones and the circumambulation Path (Pradakshina Path) encompassing three small shrines in a single complex with a common mandapa.
