Inter-linking of Rivers Project Task Force member Vedire Sriram said that their main agenda was to bring about consensus among the Chief Ministers across the nation by convincing them to agree on inter-linking of rivers project. Speaking to the media at State BJP office here on Monday, Sriram said there are apprehensions among the States that inter-linking of rivers will affect the assured waters of the respective States.

Hyderabad: Inter-linking of Rivers Project Task Force member Vedire Sriram said that their main agenda was to bring about consensus among the Chief Ministers across the nation by convincing them to agree on inter-linking of rivers project. Speaking to the media at State BJP office here on Monday, Sriram said there are apprehensions among the States that inter-linking of rivers will affect the assured waters of the respective States. “The Inter-linking of Rivers project will not disturb the assured waters for States and would only utilize the surplus water or flood waters”, he clarified.

Sriram said the Narendra Modi government will implement the Supreme Court direction of inter-linking of rivers as soon as possible. Alleging that the UPA government kept inter-linking of rivers project aside for the last 10 years, he said the Modi government set up a committee under the chairmanship of Union Irrigation Minister Uma Bharathi and Chief Ministers of 20 States as members. He said the Modi government also set up a Task Force headed by Nawlavala to look into the inter linking of rivers.

He said the main objective of the task force is as follows: to speed up the process of inter linking of rivers; bring about consensus among all the States on the project, time and implementation schedules, environmental aspects and funding mechanism of the inter linking of rivers; to study the economic viability; socio-economic aspects, environmental aspects etc; to find out the appropriate organizational structure to implement inter linking of rivers and focus on intra-basin and interstate links and intra-state links.

He said that the earlier committee headed by Suresh Prabhu had identified 30 inter-linking projects in 2002 and three projects were under construction. He said the agenda of the Modi government in this regard is innovative replacement and rehabilitation package to the affected people.

The task force will review the proposals of 30 projects estimated to cost Rs 4.5 lakh crores and 10 crore acres new ayacut and 34,000MW power production now. He said the Task Force will meet on April 22 in New Delhi in its first meeting and it will discuss on innovative replacement and rehabilitation to affected people.
