Hyderabad: The Union Ministry of Forests and Environment accorded permission to the Telangana government to set up thermal power project in 5000 acres of forest land as against 10,000 acres sought by the State government in Nalgonda district. The government had recently sent proposals seeking permission to take over 10,000 acres of forest land at Dilavarpur village of Damaracharla in Nalgonda district to construct the project with an installed capacity of 6800 MW.

The ministry informed the state government that the project does not require more than 5000 acres of land as per the DPR (Detailed Project Report) and the same was being accepted under stage- one clearance. State government should compensate the acquired forest land through the transfer of equivalent revenue land to the Forest department.

The officials of the Energy department told The Hans India that the government had asked for 10,000 acres of land to set up ancillary units along the project. The centre did not accept but to consented to give only 5,000 acres. The ministry also asked the government to pay Rs 160 crore for the afforestation of the transferred revenue land including fencing by the state Forest department.

Sources said Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had already instructed the Revenue department to identify suitable land and transfer to the Forest department immediately. The Energy officials have been asked to rush to New Delhi and get all the required permissions within a fortnight.
