National Fathers Day was celebrated at Jawahar Bal Bhavan, Public Garden in Hyderabad on Sunday jointly by Children’s Rights Initiatives for Shared Parenting (CRISP) and Save Indian Family Group(SIF—APTS).

Speaking on the occasion, Kumar Jahgirdar, founder of CRISP, a national body to fight for children’s rights said the Law Commission had recommended joint custody of minors to both the parents removing superiority of one parent over the other in case of custody of the child of the separated parents. Law Commission recommendation this year was a big achievement of CRISP, he said and added that Fathers Day was celebrated by fatherless children (orphans) and childless fathers (divorced fathers) amidst the gathering of 400 children, parents and families.

Children had performed some spectacular cultural activities on the occasion where High Court judge Justice Challa Kodanda Ram and former High Court judge Justice Chandra Kumar were present. Justic Challa Kodanda Ram said, “Child is most important person in our society. Children are future of the nation. There should be a balanced approached by both the parents in their upbringing.

To avoid divorce, counseling must be strong. Unfortunately it is neither strong nor professional,” he said. Justice Chandra Kumar said couple must bury their difference, bury their past and must stay together for the welfare of their child/children. Love was not blossoming through social media. It was in fact, impacting the family life very badly.

Any couple who was worried about the future of their children must sacrifice, forget differences, bury their past and live together, he said. Even after they were separated in an unavoidable circumstance, they must work together, think together about the future of such a child, he said. Kumar Jahgirdar said in our country the idea of shared parenting was very new. Recommendation of Law Commission was one step ahead on the lines of developed countries to give parental right to both the parents in case of separation. Nearly 18 countries like the UK, the USA and many European countries had laws making shared parenting mandatory. This was done keeping in view of the welfare and future of the children of the separated parents. But, this was not the end, he said. “We still have to go a long way. It must become a law.

So, we have been celebrating Fathers Day across the country, creating awareness for the shared parenting. We have also been lobbying with Members of Parliament as well as Politicians for the law. We also demand to setup a separate Union Ministry for children and to de-link the same from the present Women and Child Development( WCD) Ministry.

It is a must because the objectives and goals are different and child rights are totally being ignored,” Jahgirdar said. Nearly five lakh children are languishing in custody battle and their future was jeopardized, he added
