Citizens, brace up for civic strike from today. With the decision of over 70,000 municipal workers to go on strike from Monday, municipal services in 93 municipalities and seven municipal corporations across Telangana is expected to be paralysed.

Hyderabad: With the decision of over 70,000 municipal workers to go on strike from Monday, municipal services in 93 municipalities and seven municipal corporations across Telangana is expected to be paralysed.
Nearly 35,000 municipal workers in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits have announced their decision to join the strike. Sanitation, public health and other municipal services would be hard hit.
Transport workers and out-sourced workers, who collect, carry and dump garbage from the households are set to join the strike. There seems be no other way for the citizens to bear the piling up of garbage in the colonies in the Twin Cities.
Since the monsoon has set in, municipal workers are carrying out fogging to prevent spread of malaria in the GHMC and other civic bodies, which is going to be affected with the strike to begin from Monday.
If the strike would continue for a few days, it would pose a health concern to the tax-payers. Added to this, hospitals would also face a tough time with no service available to pick up medical waste.
The striking employees have been demanding minimum wage for sanitary workers be raised from Rs 8,500 to Rs 14,170. And for the skilled workers, they want a hike in minimum wage from Rs 9,500 to Rs 17,380.
Among the other demands include health cards and crediting provident fund directly into their accounts. Blaming the state government for forcing them to go on strike, AITUC leader Yesu Ratnam said that the unions have served the strike notice to the State Government.
Labour Minister Naini Narasimha Reddy held discussion with them on June 20. The Municipal Administration Department officials also held talks twice on June 22 and June 23 and sought 10 days time to address their demands. However, there was no response from them so far, he pointed out.
The seven unions, which include CITU, FTU, BMS, HMS, IFTU, AITUC and TSTU served the strike notice on June 25. However, they have postponed it until July 6 following an assurance by GHMC Commissioner and Special Officer Somesh Kumar. “We hoped the TRS government would do justice. But, the government has not responded,” he added.
All the seven municipal unions have announced the strike. However, the union affiliated to the ruling TRS party has remained indecisive as joining might anger the party. But, fearing that not joining might alienate it from the workers, it was likely to join the strike, though no formal announcement has come from it so far.
