Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Thursday decided not to join the central pool of MBBS and PG seats in view of the Article 371-D being in force. Replying to the Centre, which wanted the Telangana government to join the central pool on June 26, the State Government has written to the Centre informing that it would not join the central pool.

According to Dr Ramesh Reddy, member, Medical Council of India, if the Telangana State joins the central pool it would be contributing 130 seats and would be eligible for 8,250 MBBS seats in the national pool and 3,750 PG seats. He further said the State should have requested the central government to relax the Article 371-D.

Telangana has a total of 510 PG MD/ MS seats and 850 MBBS seats in government medical colleges while a total of 10,798 MD/MS seats and 20,574 MBBS seats are available across the country. Telangana Junior Doctors’ Association president Dr G Srinivas said, if we give 50 per cent of PG seats to the central pool, students would stand to get benefitted by getting admissions into top colleges like Maulana Azad Medical College, Lady Hardinge Medical College and St John’s Medical College and Stanley Medical College across the country.

“As it evident from AIIMS and other central exams, our students have performed well and bagged many seats. They will also get national exposure and get into reputed national colleges,” he said.
