A new National Crime Records Bureau data reveals that 898 farmers have committed suicide due to several reasons in 2014 and Telangana is ranked second among all the states in the country.


Medak and Warangal districts witnessed maximum number of suicides. The crop failure pushed the farmers to suicide due to decrease in groundwater levels, poor irrigation facilities, inadequate rainfall and dry borewells. With the frequent power cuts and majority of the crops depending on borewells, the farmers were affected.


The NCRB data also revealed other reasons - bankruptcy or indebtedness, drug abuse or alcoholic addiction, illness, failure of crop and family problems. Last year 23.2 percent of suicides in Telangana due to bankruptcy or indebtedness. Most victims were harassed by illegal moneylenders that led to them ending their lives reveal Human rights activists.


According to Warangal officials, farmlands dried up with less rainfall and as groundwater levels went down irrigation were affected badly.
