TPCC plans protests over ‘duplicate scheme’

Party leaders question rationale behind launching new programme while ‘Mana Vauru Mana Pranalika’ is languishing

Hyderabad: The Congress party activists will gherao officials in districts and question them the rationale behind launching “Grama Jyothi” scheme even as “Mana Vuru Mana Pranalika” programme is languishing.

The Congress party has continued to express its reservations on the “Grama Jyothi” scheme ever since it is announced and described it as “old wine in new bottle.” The “Mana Vuru Mana Pranalika” was launched a year ago and the government had earmarked Rs 14,658 crore for the programme.

The works proposed to be undertaken included cement roads at a cost of Rs 6578.26 crore, drainage works Rs 2846.29 crore, overhead tanks Rs 874.16 crore, irrigation Rs 1476.31 crore, construction of bridges Rs 797.92 crore and laying of pipelines Rs 638.52 crore.

The programme had turned out to be damp squib as the government could not spend even 20 per cent of funds, the Congress leaders said. As such, the “Grama Jyothi” scheme was another instance of government’s attempt to mislead the people, they argued.

They cited the Chief Minister, K Chandrashekar Rao’s series of “missteps” like plans to shifting of Chest Hospital and Secretariat, draining of Hussain Sagar lake, construction of skyscraper and change in alignment of Metro Rail among others to drive their point home.

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) working president, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, strongly criticised the “Grama Jyothi” scheme. Terming it as nothing but “duplication of earlier scheme,” the leader alleged that the Chief Minister could continue to take village folk for a ride by announcing schemes.

“It’s clear now that KCR just wants to ensure that the pictures of him and his son dominate the thorough fares of villages,” he said. He said the entire exercise would end up in futility as the government could not mobilise funds to take forward the scheme.

He wondered how the government could mobilise Rs 1.70 crore to implement the flagship programmes like Scheduled Caste and Backward and Minorities welfare, Mission Kakatiya and now “Grama Jyothi.”

TPCC working president Bhatti Vikramarka felt that the scheme was launched because it was a “money-spinning” programme for those in power.
