Hyderabad: The Telangana State government has increased the excise licence fee by 20 per cent to attain the target of Rs 12,000 crore during 2015-17. The new Excise Policy will come into force from October 1.Principal Secretary Excise and Commercial Taxes Ajay Mishra said in the order on Friday that the license fee had been fixed basing on the population as per the 2011 census.

The licence fee will be Rs 39 lakh per year in the towns having population up to 10, 000, Rs 40.80 lakh with population above 10,000 up to 50,000, Rs 50.40 lakh with above 50,000 up to 3 lakh, Rs 60 lakh above 3 lakh up to 5 lakh, Rs 81.60 lakh above 5 lakh up to 20 lakh and Rs 1.08 crore would be collected from each liquor outlet as licence fee in the cities where the population is more than 20 lakh. The method of selection for grant of shop licences would be by draw of lots.

Elaborating on the measures to curb the illicit liquor menace, the government order said the Enforcement Wing would be strengthened. Steps would also be taken to initiate the establishment of de-addiction centres in all the districts in the State in consultation with Health, Medical and Family Welfare Departments.

The Telangana Wine Dealers Association strongly opposed the hike in the licence fee without considering the long- pending demand for increase trade margin. Liquor business was already hit after the bifurcation of the state. The sudden increase of the license fee will mar the business prospects further.
