Hyderabad: The Telangana State-run universities henceforth will have regular recruitment and will do away with recruitment of contract teaching staff recruitment. The Telangana State government has decided to fill up vacant teaching posts in the universities with the regular recruitment in the next three months.

This decision of the government comes as the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) grade was at stake due to dearth of permanent faculty members in the all the universities. Permanent faculty is one among the criteria that is taken for awarding NAAC grade to the universities as well to colleges. Currently no State-run universities do have NAAC grade.

Addressing the media after a daylong meeting with in-charge vice-chancellors and registrars of the 11 State-run universities along with the officials of Telangana State Council of Higher Education here on Saturday, Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Kadiyam Srihari lamented that the academic standards took a beating as there wasn’t full scale recruitment in the varsities over the past two decades.

“Some universities are not in a state to go for University Grants Commission 12 (B) status because of the absence of regular teaching staff. To overcome this situation, the government has decided to fill up sanctioned teaching posts in the universities. The universities are directed to send proposals of vacant posts against the sanctioned,” Kadiyam Srihari said adding that varsities must restore the academic discipline.

The Deputy Chief Minister blamed earlier governments in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh for the sorry state of affairs in the State-run universities. “The government is making efforts to revive the academic standards, but it will take two to three years,” he said. During the meeting, the officials were directed to install biometric system and CCTVs in all university constituent and affiliated colleges and December 31 was set as the deadline to complete the works.

The universities’ officials were instructed to make the documentations of the lands and assets as there were instances of land grabbing. Further they were directed to establish e-library with internet and Wi-Fi facilities to the students. Education Minister Kadiyam Srihari further said that besides textbooks, the students would be provided advanced facilities.

He announced that services of the universities like scholarships, certificates and others would go online in the phased manner to reduce the human interface. Kadiyam stated all varsities and colleges would implement Choice Based Credit System for undergraduate courses from next academic year. He added that CBCS was being implemented for postgraduate courses from this year.

He lamented that quality research in the universities has come down and urged the officials to go for quality and credible research. “The government will support varsities with required grants for academic blocks, labs, infrastructure and hostels,” he said.

Kadiyam urged the universities to mobilise funds for themselves by extending their services. He said a meeting with vice-chancellors would be held once in every three months to take stock of the situation and also action report on the decisions taken in the earlier meeting.
