SC, ST, BC students studying in govt schools to be exempted from fee

Hyderabad: If Telangana Directorate of School Education (DSE) has its way, students in the private and corporate schools will have to cough up five times more money towards the SSC Public Examination fee.

The department mooted the proposal to hike examination fee for the private and corporate schools from Rs 125 to Rs 700 after it found that it was spending more money that what was receiving through the fee.

According to officials, the department spends about Rs 700 per one student on conducting the examination, but collects only Rs 125. This has become a burden to the department. It spends about Rs 30 crore to conduct the examinations, whereas it earns only half of it. To save money in its coffers, the department is preparing a proposal to hike the fee.

On the other hand, it wants to exempt fee for the SC, ST and BC students studying in the State-run schools. Presently, these students are exempted from the fee if their family income is less than Rs 25,000 per annum.

Now irrespective of income of the students’ family, the department wants to waive off fee. However, minimal fee i.e. Rs 75 or Rs 100 would be charged from the OC students studying in the government-run schools.

The Directorate of Government Examinations is making the proposal which would be sent to the government for an approval in two or three weeks. As the SSC examination fee dates and fee were already announced, the department intends to implement hike in the fee from the next academic year.
