Hyderabad: Increasing number of pedestrians’ deaths seems to have made the police to rethink their strategies on road crossings, after they learnt that over 80 percent of deaths in Hyderabad and Cyberabad occurred while pedestrians were crossing the roads.
After taking several factors that were resulting in pedestrian deaths into consideration, the twin commissionerates’ traffic police are planning to focus on facilitating basic amenities to the pedestrians. Around 550 pedestrians were killed in road accidents including 390 in Cyberabad alone this year till October.
About 70 per cent of fatalities in road accidents in Hyderabad and Cyberabad were shared by the pedestrians and motorcyclists. As many as 300 motorcyclists were killed in Cyberabad and 100 motorcyclists were killed in Hyderabad.
The traffic police feel that facilitating the pedestrians with footpaths, foot-over bridges and proper installation of signage would reduce the number of fatalities. A proposal for construction of 79 foot-over bridges has been made by the police but only two were sanctioned by the
government.
As many as over 6,000 accidents have taken place this year in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits in which 1,295 died instantly or while undergoing treatment. According to the police observation, more fatal accidents have occurred when motorists were going to work or leaving for homes.
Cyberabad DCP Avinash Mohanty said the number of fatalities in road accidents would reduce drastically if the proper arrangements were made for pedestrians. It is observed that more pedestrians are prone to accidents while crossing roads. In many instances, the deaths were results of inadequate knowledge on road safety, as people did not wait for the vehicles to pass and try to cross the road in a hurry, he said.
“Providing basic amenities to the walkers like more zebra-crossings, footpaths and also foot-over bridges will ensure reduction of road accidents. Deaths on Nehru Outer Ring Road have come down as enforcement is done at faster pace. We have sent proposals to the government requesting construction of 25 foot-over bridges initially at Kukatpally, LB Nagar, Uppal, Vanasthalipuram and other places where more fatalities are recorded,” said DCP Avinash.
