Khammam: Social media like Facebook, smart phone applications like WhatsApp have both positive and negative impacts. The effect of these social media could be seen more during festivals or special occasions like New Year etc.

When there were no social media platforms, people use to buy greeting cards for every occasion. But now they simply forward the message through their smart phone, thus bringing down the business. Only those without smart phones were purchasing greeting cards. Satyam, a book shop owner lamented that the sales of greeting cards was not like in previous years due to apps like ‘WhatsApp’ and ‘Facebook’ in the mobiles.

Many college students who have smart phones stopped purchasing greeting cards as they are conveying wishes through these apps. Only school-going children and those, who do not have smart phones, are purchasing greeting cards.

Meanwhile, arrangements for welcoming 2016 are going on in Khammam on Thursday. The managements of several schools have cut the cake in the school premises and wished the children and staff on the occasion.

On the other hand, bakeries, bouquet shops are busy with customers. Bakeries, sweet shops, chicken centres and wine shops are well decorated with balloons, lightings and with flexis of special offers to attract the customers.

The police officials imposed several restrictions to maintain law and order during the New Year celebrations on December 31st. They strictly warned the people not to organise any private events and DJ’s without permission. Steps were taken to avoid accidents. Special teams of traffic police were deployed to keep an eye on drunken drivers.
