For the first time in Telangana and in Khammam district, the 61st senior national-level ball badminton tournament for men and women began here on Sunday on a colourful note.

Khammam: For the first time in Telangana and in Khammam district, the 61st senior national-level ball badminton tournament for men and women began here on Sunday on a colourful note.

TRS MLC Balasani Lakshminarayana and Zilla Parishad Chairperson Gadepalli Kavitha inaugurated the tournament by releasing balloons at the Pavilion Grounds here.

Nearly 620 men and women from 27 states across the country will participate in the tournament, which will be organised for five days from January 10 to 15. About 30 men and 26 women teams will compete in the tourney.

Speaking to the media, Ball Badminton Association district coordinator Suresh said that this was the first time in Telangana and also in Khammam the tournaments are being held. Elaborate arrangements with all facilities and free boarding and lodging were made for the players, he added.

Suresh also said that matches will be held in mornings and evenings for the benefit of the sports lovers. About eight courts are laid and evening matches will be conducted under floodlights.
