Adilabad: The four and half decade-old government hospital building at Luxettipet mandal headquarters in Adilabad district is almost in ruining condition, posing a threat to the visiting patients and the hospital’s medical and health staff.

The hospital, which was constructed way back in 1970, used to treat patients of Luxettipet, Dandepalli and Jannaram mandals. Though it was upgraded into a 30-bed hospital in later years, it is now limited to out-patient ward only.

Come rain water leaks from the roof and seeps into the walls of the hospital. The roof appears as if it will collapse any moment.

It is better not to mention the facilities available in the hospital because there are none. The x-ray machine, generator and the tools in the operation theatre were thrown in garbage bins.

The x-ray machine has been under repair for the last 15 years. But the x-ray technician, who never attends the duty, collects his salary regularly. The medicines supplied by the government reaches very few patients and the rest goes into garbage bins. Though there are 24 members for undertaking sanitation work, still the hospital stinks.

The government had sanctioned Rs 2.5 lakh from the development fund, out of which the officials spent Rs 1,71,542. However, no one knew under which heads the funds were spent.

CPI-ML (New Democracy) leader Donda Prabhakar said that no one knew when the lab technician attended the duties last. The patients are compelled to go private labs for tests.

The Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO) Lakkavat Ravinder was caught while accepting bribe for issuing a medical certificate. Later Dr Rakesh, a dentist, who was appointed as DDO was facing criminal charges for outraging the modesty of a married woman.

It is said that he clandestinely visits the office to sign in the register since last two months. There are five doctors including four doctors on contract basis but only two are available on any given time in the hospital. There are two lady doctors but there is not a room in the hospital to check the pregnant women.

The lady doctors said that there are no wash rooms even for them. They said that it is high time the government responded and build a new building for the hospital to provide medical services to the poor.

There is a Hospital Development Committee headed by MLA Divakar Rao, who seldom visits the hospital. It appears that the Luxettipet government hospital is useful for only conducting post mortem examinations.

Presently, the doctors are using the newly constructed building for the Mother and Child Care Centre for checking the patients.

BJP mandal unit president Boppu Satish said that people laid siege to the hospital several times and staged dharnas for its development but nothing happened. It is high time the government ordered construction of new building for the hospital.
