Medaram (Warangal): The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has come to the rescue of district administration to maintain cleanliness at Medaram and its surroundings. The GHMC chief public relations officer K Venkata Ramana told The Hans India that a total of 35 mini-auto trolleys of the corporation have been specially deployed to clear garbage at different sites of the Jatara.

The GHMC Commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy provided the trolleys following a request from the Warangal district collector V. Karuna. According to the officials, about 5,000 tonnes of garbage is being generated every day by the devotees attending the Sammakka Sarakka Jatara.

The mini-autos were able to reach up to narrow paths and temporary settlements raised by the devotees in and around Medaram village. A total of 5,000 sanitation personnel from Rajahmundry were deployed to face the challenge of cleaning the massive garbage generated every minute and maintain cleanliness in the village.

Meanwhile, defeating the efforts of the district administration and TS Pollution Control Board to prevent the use of plastic at Jatara, the devotees made use of plastic extensively. Plastic carry bags, glasses, bottles and other materials were found all over the place. The shops selling food items, coconuts, jaggery and others material have been packing the items in plastic bags.

“The officials want to prevent use of plastic at Jatara but it is an impractical idea as without use of plastic we can’t run over business” commented a trader K Rajamouli. The gunny bags supplied by the district administration were insufficient to meet the needs of multitude of devotees here, he added. According to the officials, nearly two lakhs of gunny bags were supplied for use at the festival.
