Warangal: If the recent past had witnessed en masse exodus of leaders defecting from Telugu Desam to TRS, it’s now the turn of fence-sitters from the Congress. The political activity in Warangal reached a crescendo with a host of second rung leaders making a beeline to the ruling TRS, especially since the notification was issued to the election of Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC).

The first election to the GWMC, which is expected to be a fierce one, is fizzling out even before the real contest has begun. Despite the efforts of the party functionaries of all opposition parties to hold their flocks together, many second rung leaders and former corporators have no qualms to join the TRS.

TRS MP K Keshava Rao and Special advisor to the government D Srinivas are playing a key role in attracting the Congress leaders. It may be mentioned here that both the leaders, who sailed along with the Congress in the past, are using their past relations while targeting the second rung leaders, sources said.

With former Congress corporators T Vidyasagar (who also held the post of Urban president), M Babu Rao, A Revathi, O Bhaskar, Baswaraj Kumar and Damera Sarwesh, and AICC member Dr Hari Rama Devi already in its kitty, the TRS is still on look out for some more leaders who have a strong hold in the divisions.

The Congress appointed M Kodanda Reddy as one of the party coordinator for the election along with the TPCC Working President Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka with a sentiment that he was part of Congress’ campaign in the 2005 corporation elections. The Congress then clinched the corporation.

The Congress coordination committee meeting that held on Monday has decided to announce the candidates on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the speculation is rife that former Congress MLA Baswaraj Saraiah likely to join the TRS. However, the leader denied it.
