New Delhi: Telangana Minister for Municipal Administration and IT K T Rama Rao here on Friday met the Union Minister for Urban Development, M Venkaiah Naidu, and sought replacement of Hyderabad with Karimnagar town in the smart cities list.

Explaining to Naidu that Hyderabad was already an A-1 city and was expanding rapidly, he said Hyderabad was developing at a faster rate than Mumbai and other cities. He said the allocation under the Smart Cities programme was Rs 100 crore which was just a pittance when compared to the fund requirement of the GHMC.

As per the report of the Isher Judge Ahluwalia Committee of the Urban Development Ministry, Hyderabad will require Rs 30,370 crore investment in its core services and Rs1,264 crore for operation and maintenance services. Even to provide acceptable levels of water supply and sewage lines, the core of the city will require Rs 15,500 crore and for Strategic Road Development Project, the GHMC will require Rs 20,661 crore.

Hence, instead of Hyderabad, the Ministry should consider including Karimnagar, a district headquarters with 2.97 lakh population for its holistic development. Hyderabad could be given greater funds for its development, he said. Reiterating the demand for increased share, he said increasing the credit limit on GSDP by 0.5 per cent would go a long way in helping the State's finances.

Referring to the ITIR scheme designed for Hyderabad by the then government in 2013, he said later a comprehensive plan was submitted to the Centre after earmarking land for the same and some of the companies had even established units there. However, Centre's funding was needed for the same, the Minister pleaded.

The Minister sought Rs 10,000 crore Central aid for Mission Bhagiratha project aimed at providing drinking water to every household. The project is proposed to be taken at a cost of Rs 40,000 crore. In his meeting with the Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, Rao raised the issue of allocation of IPS officers to the State. The state needed 141 IPS officers whereas only 112 were allotted now, he said. He pressed for bifurcation of the High Court at the earliest.
