Hyderabad: Democratic Teachers’ Federation (DTF) has demanded that the Telangana government withdraw its decision to close schools in the name of education reforms. Addressing the media, DTF President M Raghushankar Reddy and General Secretary M N Kistappa said that the government’s decision would not only adversely affect the interests of students from the weaker sections, but also end up further benefitting the private schools.

They said the government’s decision to merge 3,244 Upper Primary Schools with the nearby schools was unscientific and it would either force the students from weaker sections to walk a distance of three to four kms to the nearest government school, opt for private schools or give up their education altogether. They pointed out that the government was preparing the ground for closing around 5,392 schools. “This amounts to a violation of the Right to Education Act. Due to this decision, 13,398 posts of teachers would also be abolished from next year. The government is giving permission indiscriminately for new private schools.
