Hyderabad: The Telangana State has clocked Rs 75,070 crore in IT and IT-enabled services (ITeS) exports during the 2015-16 financial year, as against Rs 66,276 crore in the previous fiscal, which is a tad higher (0.96 per cent) than the national average growth of 12.3 per cent.

“When we came into power in June 2014, the State IT export figures were at Rs 57,000 crore. We had then announced that we would double the numbers in the next five years.

Accordingly, last year, the IT export numbers stood at around Rs 67,000 crore. For 2015-16, we were able to keep up the momentum and crossed the Rs 75,000-crore mark,” said State IT, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao.

Releasing the second annual report of the State IT department in Hyderabad on Wednesday, the Minister said the IT sector generated employment to 35,611 professionals in the last one year, taking the total number to 4,07,385 in the State.

He further said in the last one year, the IT sector in Telangana, predominantly in Hyderabad, started making headway into Warangal.

“The IT policy released last year had received extremely encouraging response from across the world and was considered business-friendly. It also laid the foundation for us to take the leadership position in many emerging technologies, especially imaging, animation, multimedia, gaming and entertainment,” the minister added.

Replying to a query, Rama Rao said the Central government had no clarity on the implementation of the IT Investment Regions (ITIRs) projects. “The Centre is in a confused state as to how to go about with the project that was announced around five years ago,” he complained.

The Centre had, in September 2012, given an in-principle approval for the ITIR for developing self-contained integrated knowledge clusters for the growth of IT and electronic hardware manufacturing in 50,000 acres in and around Hyderabad.

However, in April 2016, the Centre has informed the State Government that it would revise the entire plan. This, according to sources, may lead to the delay in the estimated investments of Rs 3 lakh crore and creation of nearly 60 lakh jobs.

“The State government is also in the process of setting up digital classrooms in more than 1,000 schools during the current year,” the minister said.

Sector-specific policies
The government is in the process of launching four sector-specific policies on cyber security, data analytics, data centres and open data within the next three months, according to the IT Minister.

"We have decided to set up the country’s largest data centre in Hyderabad. A policy to support this initiative will be rolled out in three months from now," the minister said.
