Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Saturday urged the Central government to give financial assistance of Rs 5000 crore for the implementation of Mission Kakatiya – a flagship programme of the state government for revival of lakes, water bodies and ponds.

In a letter addressed to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, the Chief Minister sought financial help for the water conservation schemes taken up on a mission mode by his government. He also urged the Centre to give necessary funds for developing the backward districts in the new State of Telangana.

KCR reminded the Union Finance Minister that the NITI Ayog had already recommended to the Centre to extend financial help for the lake-revival programme for the next three years in Telangana.

The aim of the programme is similar to that of the schemes of conservation of water and to increase groundwater table taken up by the Union Water Resources Ministry across the nation, he said. The Chief Minister in his letter also explained about the Mission Kakatiya and its progress and targets being achieved.

He said his government had already requested the Centre for Rs 30,571-crore assistance for Mission Bhagiratha aimed at providing drinking water to all.
