Mahbubnagar: Some Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) activists tried to attack senior BJP leader Nagam Janardhan Reddy while he was addressing a media conference at the Roads and Buildings Guest House here on Saturday.

The TRS has been organising protests in the district for the past few days denouncing Janardhan Reddy’s attempts to stall the Palamuru–Rangareddy Lift Irrigation scheme by moving court against the project. They burnt effigies of Janardhan Reddy as part of their protests.

Nagam Janardhan Reddy held a media conference at the R&B Guest House to explain his stand on the lift irrigation scheme. Raising slogans against Janardhan Reddy, a group of TRS activists stormed into the R&B Guest House. The BJP activists who were present at the media conference, resisted the TRS workers.

It ensued a tussle between the TRS and BJP activists. Furniture was destroyed and window panes were broken. Cameras of a few TV crew members were also damaged in the melee. On hearing the news of the attack bid, police rushed to the place and dispersed the clashing TRS and BJP activists by using force.

Some TRS activists were taken into custody and shifted to the Two-Town police station. Nagam addressed the media after normalcy was restored at the venue. The BJP leader made it clear that he moved court challenging the awarding of four of the 18 packages of the project to inexperienced contractors.

Janardhan Reddy said he got the right to question the TRS government pertaining to large scale irregularities that were taking place in execution of the lift irrigation scheme. Later, he lodged a complaint in the Two Town police station demanding the arrest of TRS activists who tried to attack him.

The Telugu Desam Party also condemned the TRS activists’ bid to attack the senior BJP leader. Having learnt about the attack bid, former MLA Kothakota Dayakar Reddy, accompanied by TDP activists, rushed to the R&B Guest House.

Condemning the attack, he alleged that the ruling TRS was trying to intimidate the opposition parties for highlighting the large scale corruption that was taking place in execution of the irrigation and other development projects in Telangana.
