Hyderabad: The endocrinology department at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) is shuttered for want of doctors. The department of Endocrinology which was one of the best in the region, when Dr P V Rao headed it, is now a pale shadow of its former self. The department has remained shut since June 15 and patients, who turn up at the department, are referred to the general medicine unit.

On an average, close to 100 patients suffering from diabetes and thyroid disorders visit NIMS everyday and are being directed to the general medicine unit. This has led to patients suffering and the name of NIMS taking a beating.

Aruna, a patient and resident of Boggulkunta said, “People go to NIMS in the hope of getting good treatment. It is so shocking that the department is closed. How can such a huge hospital not have enough doctors?”

Dr Rekha Singh, endocrinologist, is on three-months leave. Insiders said that overload had taken a toll on her health and she was forced to take leave. When asked, Dr K Manohar, Director, NIMS, said a notification for recruitment of staff was given and doctors for endocrinology department too have been added.”

Posts for endocrinology and metabolism are called for in the category of super specialties, including cardiothoracic surgery, hematology, nephrology, rheumatology and urology. NIMS has issued notification for recruitment of professors and assistant professors to close to 34 departments.

Since 2004, many doctors have left NIMS and joined private hospitals. The trend has been so alarming that till date more than 100 doctors have left for greener pastures. A senior doctor at NIMS said getting assistant and associate professors is not easy. It takes several years before an assistant professor is entrusted with additional responsibilities but attrition is a major issue.

There were instances when HoDs retired and the posts remained vacant for months together, said an official. A senior doctor said doctors had left NIMS from almost every department, including surgical oncology, urology, nephrology, neurosurgery to name a few.
