Nizamabad: Minister for Environment and Forests Jogu Ramanna said that the loss of large areas of green cover were responsible for the recurring droughts, floods and cyclones in the country. Unfortunately, there was an average of 27 trees in the country, he lamented.

Participating in the Haritha Haram programme in Perkit village of Armoor mandal in the district on Sunday, he said that the State government would initiative steps to strengthen laws relating to the protection of forest lands.

The Forests Minister warned that those who were found felling of trees indiscriminately would be arrested and non-bailable warrants would be issued. They would also be tried under the Preventive Detention Act, he added. He said that the even the owner of the tree does not have the right to cut it and he has to obtain the prior permission of the village panchayat before cutting down a tree.

Minister Ramanna said that the relation that exists between a tree and a man was like the relationship between a mother and her child. The presence of large tracts of forest area was responsible for the heavy rainfall in Nirmal while the absence of forests was resulting in deficit rainfall in Nizamabad town, he added.

Trees have become a part of our lives and they protect humanity from ecological disasters, he added.
