Hyderabad: Thanks to the indifferent attitude of the civic authorities, open manholes continue to pose grave threat to the lives of people. Despite several complaints made to the civic authorities, the open manholes continue to haunt residents of railway quarters at Mettuguda.

In most cases, open manholes are visible, but the ones at the railway quarters are unseen as they are located underneath wild trees. These open manholes pose danger to commuters, pedestrians and children who play here.

“Nobody can notice these manholes as they are covered by the trees. People here go on a stroll and there are chances of falling into them if negligent. The civic authorities will open their eyes only after some untoward thing happens,” rued N Shankar Naik, a resident of Mettuguda.

In fact, reacting to the new stories on open manholes in these columns, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) had asked the civic officials to cover them immediately. However, nothing of that sort seems to be happening at the ground level.

Adding to the residents’ woes, these open manholes overflow whenever it rains even slightly. “Normally, it emanates stinking smell and when it rains the stench becomes terrible. Nobody can pass through these manholes,” said P Shravan, a resident of Malkajgiri.

The residents rue that all their complaints to cover the open manholes to the civic authorities have gone in vain. “We gave several representations to civic authorities and nothing happened till now.

The government should do something about this issue,” S Kiran Kumar, a shopkeeper said. In the absence of street lights, footpaths, sign boards and medians, the roads in this area are turning out to be accident zones.
