Sangareddy: The Sangareddy police foiled the indefinite hunger strike by former Congress MLA T Jayaprakash Reddy alias Jagga Reddy, in support of Mallanna Sagar oustees, and arrested him even before he could start the fast on Wednesday.

Police said Reddy went ahead with publicising the proposed strike in newspapers and posters though he was denied permission.

On Wednesday morning, Reddy along with his supporters took out a rally from his residence to Inspection Bungalow (the fasting venue). Just when the rally reached Sangareddy Town Police station, police took him into preventive custody. Later, he was taken to Indrakaran police station and was released shortly.

Meanwhile, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Uttam Kumar Reddy, Congress leaders Jana Reddy and Damodara Raja Narasimha, who reached Sangareddy, condemned the arrest and said they were not opposing the project, but were only demanding implementation of Land Act-2013 instead of GO 123.

Addressing the media later, Jayaprakash Reddy said he would plan another fast in the next couple of days. Further, Uttam alleged that revenue officials were continuing the registration of lands for Mallanna Sagar and demanded action against those officials.

Meanwhile, TRS MLA Chinta Prabhakar criticised the Congress leaders for "acting without proper knowledge on the subject". Addressing media persons, he said construction of Mallanna Sagar was necessary to stop farmers' suicides in Medak district.

He also found fault with Jayaprakash Reddy for unnecessarily attempting to go on fast, at a time when the Division Bench of High Court granted stay on the single Judge order.
