Warangal: Peddammagadda Basti, which earned the sobriquet of crime incubator, is on the radar of Warangal police, albeit differently. City Police Commissioner G Sudheer Babu, who kicked off several policing and community initiatives as part of crime fighting strategy, has come out with yet another out-of-the-box initiative ‘Basti Mitra’.

The plan is to reach out 33 bastis sans development in the tri-cities of Warangal-Hanamkonda-Kazipet assisting the local youths to find their way of living upright. The police who noticed that majority of crimes take place in the Commissionerate area are some way or other way have links with some persons living in Peddammagadda basti that falls on the stretch of Kakatiya University-Mulug bypass road, aptly have decided to start the Basti Mitra programme from here before extending it to other bastis.

The cops also noticed that bastis have turned out to be havens for gudumba (illicitly distilled liquor) manufacturing and gambling. Besides keeping a tab on these social maladies, the police have plans to identify the problems faced by the people living in these bastsis and bring them to the notice of departments concerned. This will be done through forming basti committees consisting of senior citizens and youths of that area.

Initially, the police will gather the information pertaining to educational qualifications of all those unemployed youths in the bastis. This is to promote them for jobs whenever opportunity arises within their scope. Apart from encouraging dropouts to get back to school, the police also have plans to open libraries and facilitate playgrounds along with sports equipment so that the focus of the youths will remain unattractive to anti-social activities.

“With the studies pointing more and more at the link between unemployment, poverty and crime, there is an imperative need to keep the youths occupied with some kind of avocation. This helps to stop the hooliganism in the youths especially those belonged to underprivileged sections,” Sudheer Babu told The Hans India.

Setting in motion his Basti Mitra programme, the Commissioner launched a Job Fair at Peddammagadda on Wednesday, in which reputed companies like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai Motors, Max Care Hospital and other shopping malls participated and offering around 187 jobs to the locals.

In all, the authorities received 220 applications. While 20 aspirants were given appointment orders on the spot, the other posts will be finalized at the recruiters’ facility on Thursday, according to Police PRO Mannava Mohan Krishna.
