Hyderabad: Stating that it was two years now since the new state was formed, Governor ESL Narasimhan on Friday asked Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to speed up reforms in education and provide jobs for youth as there was no time to waste.

The Governor was speaking at a meeting organised to mark the inauguration of Skill Development Centre by Telangana Jagruti headed by Nizamabad MP K Kavitha. “Kavithaji, this State is now two years old. I urge from this forum to the Chief Minister to move fast since time is running out.

We have no time to waste. We have to move forward. It is not that we don’t have jobs… we have jobs. Many of our post-graduates are jobless, why? We need to rethink on the education system,” said Narasimhan.

Governor observed that the education system was being commercialised. “Saraswati is converted into Lakshmi unfortunately… this conversion has to go back.

Lakshmi and Saraswati have to be on different footing altogether,” he said. The Governor further said that there was a need for review of the education system. “Look at the state of our education.

Students who spend five years to complete engineering are coming for the job of a peon, which shows there is something seriously wrong with our education system,” said Narasimhan.

“Unfortunately, our system has failed us. We are seeing skill as a substitute but it should be add-on facility. It will only enhance our competence and capability. We have to move economy through skills,” he said.

Recalling the education system during his school days, the Governor said that they used to undergo training in at least one of the skills like carpentry, artistry or weaving. He asked the government to focus on the rural areas imparting raw skills like repairing an air-conditioner, car or other gadgets.

Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Governor said that he had taken a bold decision to impart skills. “How are we going to have skilled workmen? If we mix and match education system with skills we can achieve this. MPs please do something,” said Narasimhan.

Union Skill Development Minister Rajeev Pratap Rudy said that the Centre would set up a state-of-the-art model skill centre in Telangana, which would begin its operations within six months. During the last 60 years, governments have been concentrating only on education without focusing on skills.

He expressed unhappiness that there were 18 lakh engineering seats and about 9 lakh pass out as engineers every year but they are not able to get a job of Rs 10,000 per month.
