Karimnagar: With more than 100 medals already in his kitty, 13-year-old Vikas Sivanandan Anantoju is creating ripples in his chosen field of martial arts. Adding a feather to his cap, recently, the London-based Wonder Book of Records organization has conferred the Certificate of Award for his achievements. At a time when the kids of his age are busy playing, Vikas kept himself busy hitting the kit bag with flashy kicks and power-packed punches.
Thanks to the support of his parents – Uma and Chandra Mohan Babu. Since he started learning karate at a very tender age of six, Vikas has been busy making rounds between his school and dojo, a place where martial arts are practiced. And his hard work didn’t go waste as he won a whopping 104 medals since he made his debut in martial arts. Of the total medals, 68 are gold, 25 are silver and 11 are bronze. This apart, the boy who is studying Class IX in Paramita School, has also won at least 10 grand championships.
Besides participating in the State and National level tournaments, he also made his appearance in international competitions in Malaysia, Singapore and Nepal. He earned his Black Belt on May 15, 2015. Speaking to The Hans India, Sensei Eppa Srinivas (Black belt 3r don in Budokan style), who is coaching Vikas, said: “Sheer determination and hard work has led Vikas to great success. He is equally adept in kumite (locally known as sparring) and katas, system of training exercises in karate, besides weapon training.”
The coach, who has high hopes on Vikas making it to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, expressed confidence that he would prepare a team for the event. It may be noted here that recently, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) included karate event in the Olympics. Chandra Mohan Babu said: “Vikas who is equally good at academics and karate is targeting the Tokyo Olympics.”
Wonder Book of Records Telangana Coordinator Gurram Swarna Sree, confirming the Certificate of Award to Vikas, commended the boy for his brilliant performances. Meanwhile, the Finance Minister E Rajender, Legislative Council chairman Swamy Goud and Government Whip Koppula Eashwar felicitated Vikas appreciating his achievements at a ceremony in Karimnagar on Tuesday.
Swamy Goud and Rajender said that government is committed to help the sportspersons in the State. They expressed confidence that the new sports policy being prepared by the government will be huge boost for sports in the State.
