Jangaon: An alleged harassment by a police Sub-Inspector has led a youth to attempt suicide, who took part in the recent agitations seeking creation of Jangaon district.

The Jangaon JAC leaders complained that the activist, called G Nagaraju, was being harassed for sometime by the town SI, S Ravinder. According to the JAC leader M Raju, the SI has summoned some of the members, who were facing cases for taking part in Jangaon district agitations, to the police station on Thursday evening.

Nagaraju went along with others to meet the SI during the evening hours. It was said that Nagaraju had complained to Human Rights Commission about the harassment by the sub-inspector, some time back. Referring to the complaint, the SI reportedly abused the activist and threatened of severe punishment.

Nagaraju, who was frightened at the threatening, ran to the second floor of the police station and jumped from there in a suicide bid. He survived but got his right leg fractured and sustained serious injuries on his waist.

SI Ravinder took him inside the station and hid him. On learning about the incident, other JAC members arrived at the police station but were denied entry. They demanded the SI to let them take Nagaraju to hospital for treatment but the sub-inspector said he would call the doctor to the police station.

The situation turned tense for some time as the JAC leaders entered into heated an argument with the SI. Nagaraju was left to suffer with pain inside the police station for more than one hour. Finally the SI allowed the JAC leaders to shift Nagaraju to a hospital at around 8:30pm and he was said to be in critical condition.

Following the incident, the JAC leaders have called on Jangaon District Collector A Devasena and apprised about the incident and complained about the inhuman treatment the activist meted out by the SI.
