Warangal Urban: Tension prevailed for some time on Kakatiya University campus on Wednesday as the students protested against the proposed common entrance test for admissions into doctoral degrees offered by universities in the State. As part of their protest, a large group of students belonging to NSUI, TGVP, PDSU, MSF and ABSF have barged into the university administrative building in Hanamkonda on the day. They tried to move towards the vice-chancellor’s chambers but were prevented by the police, who pushed the students away.

Arguments ensued between the police and the protesting students. Following which they squatted in front of the building and shouted slogans against the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and Deputy CM K Srihari opposing their efforts to introduce the common entrance test. The protesting students also raised slogans against the police accusing them of thrashing the students. Some students climbed the administrative building and tried to burn a flexi of the Deputy CM and the TSCHE chairman Prof T Papi Reddy.

Speaking to press persons on the occasion, NSUI leader A Karthik, TGVP leader R Vijay and others demanded the State government withdrawal of the idea of introducing PhD common entrance test. The government was plotting to suppress the students, who actively took part in separate Telangana by adopting anti-students policies. The student community was fully opposing the idea of common entrance test, they said.

No other State in the country was practicing the system of conducting common entrance for admissions into PhD degrees. The existing practicing of each university conducting its own entrance test for PhD admissions should be continued, Vijay said. The courses offered by different universities vary and hence holding a common entrance test would not be advisable, they argued. They warned that serious agitations would be taken up in the days to come if the government fails to withdraw the proposal.

They also wanted release of notification for Ph D admissions at Kakatiya University. It might be noted that during a vice-chancellor's conference held in the State capital on Tuesday, the Deputy CM and Education Minister Srihari asked the V-Cs of State universities to consider conducting a common entrance test for UG and PG courses and doctoral degrees.Meanwhile, the students have planned to stage protest and burn an effigy of Deputy CM Srihari on Thursday at SDLCE centre condemning the alleged highhandedness of police against the protesting students.
