Mahabubabad: The Centre’s decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes allegedly drove a woman to hang herself to death at Chenagapuram on the outskirts of Mahabubabad district headquarters. The deceased woman was identified as K Vinoda (55).

The family sold 12 acres land, worth about Rs 80 lakh, they owned at Amanagal near Mahabubabad two months ago. The buyers paid the amount in a phased manner and an amount of Rs 48 lakh was stocked in her house.

Some amount was spent on the treatment of Vinoda's ailing husband K Upendra Chary and they were planning to buy another piece of land, hence the money was kept in the house instead of depositing in the bank after clearing a loan of Rs 20 lakhs.

A dispute over sharing out the amount was said to be going on in the family. Vinoda wanted to ensure a share in the amount to her daughters Rajitha and Shashikala while keeping aside some amount towards her husbands’ treatment, but her son Srinivas wanted a lion’s share, according to sources.

As the row over sharing the amount was going on, the government’s decision of demonetising Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes stirred up the affairs at home. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement saying the notes would be nothing but waste paper was said to have shocked the woman, sources said.

A quarrel on Wednesday night ensued over the fate of the amount and the tax they need to pay if the money was deposited in the bank and they blamed Vinoda for selling the land against their suggestion.

The woman who was depressed at the demonetising of the currency notes and clashes at home hanged herself from a ceiling fan at her residence during the wee hours of Thursday. “The family members could have sorted out the issue of sharing the money in some time, but the government’s decision aggravated the situation,” commented a neighbour V Kantha Rao.

Mahabubabad Rural CI Krishna Reddy and SI Jitender visited spot. Based on a complaint by Vinoda’s brother P Veerabhadra Chary who raised suspicion over the version of the family members on the death of his sister, the police registered a case in connection.
