Hyderabad: With 56 per cent literacy, the tribal-dominated Mahabubabad continues to lag behind in education. Denizens during Dasa-Disa debate organised by HMTV on Saturday demanded that the government extend better amenities, so that they can avoid travelling long distances to neighbouring districts for higher studies.

Speaking on the occasion students demanded the authorities to provide hostel facilities, as some of them have temporarily turned into government offices following re-organisation of district.

They said most of the hostels attached to government colleges lack basic facilities like toilets, forcing the students to stay in private hostels. For school going children the poor transportation facility had become a major problem and they cannot reach back their tandas, before dark, they said.

Krishna Moorthy, a local held that lack of colleges including polytechnic, engineering and other professional colleges had prompted about 90 per cent of the students to apply for higher education in neighbouring districts of Warangal and Khammam. “Not a single engineering college is available in the town, hence students have to travel long distances in train,” he said.

Responding to the issue, MLA B Shankar Naik informed that Mahabubabad would soon get women’s degree college and Kesamudram would get a tribal welfare residential school at a cost of Rs 23 crores and Rs 4.5 crores respectively. He assured that the institutions would become functional from next academic year.

He also informed that a Horticulture University would come up on 160 acres of land earmarked earlier for Agricultural University. While the local MP, A Sitaram Naik informed that efforts were being made to come up with a PG centre affiliated to Kakatiya University so that students can avail higher studies in Mahabubabad.

He also informed that he was pursuing with the Central government to sanction National Nursing College in the town. Debating over the issue of lake and land encroachments some locals alleged that the MLA Shankar Naik was directly involved in most of the cases.

Without naming him, one of the participants held that the MLA had threatened him, when he intervened over some land issue. Backing his argument other youth said that Giri had to spend 15-days in Central jail for taking on the MLA.

Joining the chorus locals like Prasad Naik alleged that a farmer from Yadav community consumed pesticide, as his land was snatched away in the name of tribal deity's temple Sevalal.

The debate was moderated by P Venkatakrishna Chief Editor (Debates and Discussions).
