Mahbubnagar: The TSTRANSCO authorities are allegedly taking the farmers for a ride ‘in cahoots with contractors.’ Moreover, the farmers are forced to purchase material, which should have been supplied by the Electricity Department free of cost.

Allegations are rife that the corrupt officials are siphoning material worth several crores off the department without executing works at the field level and manipulating the official records.

Farmer alleged that they are forced to grease the palms of one or the other to secure transformers, poles and get their pump sets energised. Further, the farmers are asked to procure material putting poor farmers in a tight corner.

To energise borewells, the officials are allegedly manipulating official records stating that they have supplied electric poles, transformers, conductor wire and other material needed without actually supplying them to the beneficiary. Farmers in several villages in Koilkonda mandal accuse staff of resorting to corrupt practices. The farmers are erecting wooden poles to install electric wire on them as the department is not supplying poles. Snapping of live wires from the wooden poles cannot be ruled out.

At many places there was no protective fence around the transformers. In fact, to support a transformer, it should be placed on a cement platform. But, in Parpalli the transformer has been placed on two rocks. Farmers from Parpalli have paid demand drafts eight months ago to get power transformers, but there is no signs of their allotment.

The electricity department personnel are accused of generating fake power bills without giving power connections. There is an inordinate delay in granting agriculture power connections in Wanaparty, Gadwal, Nagar Kurnool, Mahabubnagar and other divisions.

Out of 38,912 power connections sought, only 16,000 have so far been granted. The officials are allegedly allotting transformers to those who grease their palms. Apart from remitting the DD for transformers, the farmers are forced to bribe the officials to the tune of Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000. Famers urge the state government to ensure that they get power connections.
