Hyderabad: Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party have demanded appointment of a house committee to probe into the irregularities in the redesigning of irrigation projects in the State.

Congress MLA T Rammohan Reddy and BJP MLA NVVS Prabhakar made this demand in the Assembly on Tuesday while discussing demands of the Major Irrigation department.

Ramohan Reddy Congress alleged that several irregularities had taken place in redesigning of the projects and wanted to know why the government had entrusted works to the contractors of Andhra Region. He wanted to know if there were no contractors in Telangana to take up works. He said that the rules in the Palamuru – Ranga Reddy lift irrigation project have been framed in a way that they apply only to one or two companies.

The regulations set up favor a few contractors. Rammohan Reddy further said that about 0.5 TMC of water which should have gone to Ranga Reddy district has been diverted to Dindi project .

BJP MLA NVSS Prabhakar also demanded that appointment of house committe on the redesigning of the project be done. He said that he was ready to prove his allegations and challenged for an open debate.

He alleged that though the government had allocated about Rs 25,000 crore for irrigation but it spent only Rs 10,000 crore this financial year.

While the WAPCOS stated in one report said about 10,000 acres could be irrigated with one TMC of water, same company in another report indicated that 12,000 acres could be irrigated.

Prabhakar demanded that the government lay foundation stone for 152 meters high barrage at Tummidihatti even though government has made agreement with Maharashtra for only 148 meters. He said that the government has failed to complete even medium irrigation projects that could be have been completed in two or three years.

Congress MLA K Venkat Reddy said that due to non release of water from Alimineti Madhav Reddy Project, crops were dying and the people did not get drinking water.

R Krishnaiah TDP demanded that government take construction of irrigation projects on a war footing. Krishnaiah wondered how Mallanna Sagar reservoir could be built without catchment area.

He said that it would cost more to pump the water to the reservoir and would cast a burden on the farmers. The government should reduce the maintenance cost of the lift schemes, he added.
