Sangareddy: May Day was celebrated in United Medak district on Monday under the aegis of CITU. All the streets in the town were turned red as thousands of workers, wearing red shirts, took part in rallies and meetings. Red flags were hoisted at hundreds of companies. Rallies were held in mandals in Sangareddy, Medak and Siddipet districts. Workers, fruit vendors, students and scores of others, wearing red shirts, participated.

The Hans India spoke exclusively with B Mallesh, district president, CITU Sangareddy, Mallesh. “Russian revolution prompted many capitalist countries to bring legislations for protecting the rights of workers. Even in India Trade unions Act of 1926 which resulted in formation of trade unions, Payment of Wages Act of 1936, Provident Fund Act, Industrial Disputes Act, Factories Act, Bonus Act and many other acts were enacted between 1926 and 1974.

But, now, the Central and the State governments are deliberately trying to weaken these acts by making amendments. These amendments benefit the owners of companies and not the workers’, said.He feels that the NDA government’s decision to bring all 44 labour laws under four labour codes is against the interests of workers. When asked to comment on why workers’ organisations affiliated to Communist parties were making a hue and cry about amendments, he replied :They had asked for changes which would benefit labour force and not affect them adversely.

He gave several examples in this regard. He flayed the State government for not following ILO resolutions regarding tripartite methods in which owners, workers and unions operate collectively. He also opposed the State government’s move to shift Dharna Chowk from Indira Park. He says that the State government is deliberately trying to weaken the unions. “There is a law pertaining to equal work for equal pay in municipalities.

But the minimum wage in GHMC is Rs 12,500 but in Sangareddy or Zaheerabad municipality, it is only Rs 8,300, he said. He also said that State government sending circulars to Municipal and Anganwadi workers not to participate in May Day celebrations; reflects Nizam’s rule . “We need to take inspiration from May Day and the sacrifices made by workers who lost their lives. We pledge to stand-up for the rights of the workers when their rights are violated continuously.

The red flag is not just a symbol of Communism. It is the colour of blood which has been shed while fighting for the rights of the workers he said”. B Mallesh is also the District Secretary of CPI (M) and the Councillor in Sangareddy Municipality.
